AI search statistics 2026.

The numbers that define how brands are found by AI this year — adoption, the SEO-to-AI citation gap, conversion, and the signals that earn citations. Every figure is attributed to its primary source.

TL;DR

AI search went mainstream in 2026: 900M weekly ChatGPT users and 1.5B monthly AI Overview users. The signals that earn AI citations have decoupled from Google rankings — under 20% overlap remains. The payoff is concentration of intent: AI visitors convert up to 23× better than organic. The levers that move visibility are citing sources (+41%), statistics (+32%) and structured, fresh content.

01 — Adoption

AI search is now mainstream

900M

ChatGPT weekly active users as of February 2026, up from 400M a year earlier and double the 400M reported in early 2025.

1B+

Google AI Mode monthly users — crossed 1 billion in its first year, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch.

48%

of commercial-intent queries now trigger a Google AI Overview, per BrightEdge commercial-vertical tracker (March 2026). Broader all-query datasets show 25%.

02 — The visibility gap

SEO rank no longer predicts AI citation

17–38%

overlap between Google top-10 organic results and AI citations in Q1 2026 — down from approximately 75% in mid-2025. Two channels now operate largely independently.

<10%

of sources cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in the Google top-10 for the same query. Strong SEO no longer guarantees AI visibility.

28.3%

of ChatGPT most-cited pages have zero organic visibility in Google — meaning AI engines have built a citation index that is substantially different from Googles.

14%

of marketers actually measure AI search performance — despite 43% claiming to optimise for it. The measurement gap is where citation share is being lost silently.

03 — Conversion

AI visitors are the highest-intent traffic on the web

23×

AI-referred visitors convert approximately 23× better than traditional organic search visitors. The intent signal is radically stronger because buyers describe their needs to the AI before arriving.

Source: Ahrefs, 2026
24:1

AI traffic generated 12.1% of signups while accounting for only 0.5% of total visits — a 24-to-1 conversion ratio that dwarfs any other traffic source.

3.1×

Perplexity-referred traffic converts at 3.1× the rate of standard Google organic across B2B client portfolios — driven by Perplexitys explicitly commercial user base (64% use it for work research).

4.2/20

Average AI visibility score for B2B companies at first GEO audit — 72% have zero answer presence on their core buyer queries. Most brands are leaving this conversion channel entirely unclaimed.

04 — What earns citations

The five signals that move AI visibility

+41%

Citation lift from adding sourced hyperlinks to content — the single highest-ROI GEO tactic in the only peer-reviewed controlled study of AI citation signals to date.

Source: Aggarwal et al. "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" — Princeton / KDD 2024
+32%

Citation lift from including specific, sourced statistics. "AI-referred traffic converts at 23×" is more citable than "AI traffic converts well."

Source: Princeton / KDD 2024
+67%

Improvement in LLM discoverability from schema markup — Organization, Article, FAQ and HowTo JSON-LD are highest-priority implementations.

Source: Yext, 2026
4.3×

More AI citations for recently updated content. 85% of AI Overview citations reference pages under 2 years old — freshness is a primary citation preference signal, especially on Perplexity.

How it works

How an AI engine decides who to cite

Most engines use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). A question is split into sub-queries (fan-out), sources are retrieved and ranked, then synthesised into one answer with citations.

User question "best X for Y" FAN-OUT sub-query 1 sub-query 2 sub-query 3 RETRIEVE & RANK sources scored Cited answer your brand here?

Generalised RAG flow. Primary reference: Princeton GEO study, KDD 2024.

FAQ

AI search statistics — questions

How many people use AI search in 2026?

ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 (OpenAI), and Google AI Overviews now reach roughly 1.5 billion monthly users. Around 25% of searches surface an AI Overview, with informational and how-to queries far more likely to trigger one than navigational or transactional searches.

Does ranking on Google still get you cited by AI?

Decreasingly. Fewer than 10% of sources cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in the Google top-10 for the same query, and the overlap between top Google links and AI-cited sources has fallen from about 70% to under 20% (Brandlight, 2026). Strong rankings still help, but they no longer guarantee AI visibility.

Why does AI-referred traffic convert better?

Because it arrives pre-qualified. When a buyer asks an AI assistant, they describe their stack, budget and constraints upfront, and the AI returns a personalised recommendation. By the time they reach your site they have already been told you fit. Ahrefs measured ~23× higher conversion versus organic; Microsoft Clarity measured an 11× advantage.

What content earns the most AI citations?

Content with cited sources (+41%), specific statistics (+32%) and expert quotations performed best in the peer-reviewed Princeton GEO study. Structurally, schema markup (+67% discoverability), short extractable paragraphs, question-formatted headers, and freshness (4.3× more citations for recently updated pages) all compound.

How often should this data be refreshed?

At least quarterly. AI engines exhibit a strong recency bias: 85% of AI Overview citations are less than two years old, and citation frequency to a page drops sharply once content is more than a few months stale.
